I'm using an i7-8700k with an AsRock 7900 XT, upgraded from a RTX 1080 Ti when Starfield launched. I'm thinking about switching to the Ryzen 7 7800X3D. I hope gaming will improve, but in most reviews it seems to lag in productivity. Since I also handle a lot of work from home, there are times I need heavy CPU tasks like file compression and virtualization. I assume a chip that's six years old won't be much faster than a brand new one, but there might be reasons—maybe the 3D v-cache affects performance. I'm okay with similar productivity if gaming gets better, but I don't want to sacrifice CPU speed in this area.

Of course, the 7800X3D isn't built for long-running workloads, but unless you're doing specialized tasks that require sustained 24-core processing, it's still a solid choice.
