Uses power throttling unexpectedly on the Asus V16 laptop.
Hi, a month ago I purchased an Asus V16 laptop with these specs: 32GB DDR5 5200MHz Intel Core 5 210H RTX 5050, up to 75W, 1TB M.2 SSD. My issue is that after turning it on and playing games like Fortnite or Minecraft for about five minutes, the power limit throttles. I usually use Intel Extreme Tuning, but I disable and enable the "turbo boost short power max enable" option, which fixes the problem temporarily. When throttling occurs, the CPU drops below 1GHz, which is frustrating because I paid for the whole machine. Also, I’ve been using it at full 80% while plugged in, and there’s no issue with charging. This started around 1-2 weeks ago. I suspect Windows updates might be the cause, but honestly I’m not sure why this happened or how to fix it permanently. I considered taking it in for warranty, but I don’t want to just send it because I’d rather handle something more serious, like a screen failure. I removed the MyGame app and used Geheyper instead, which keeps the "turbo" option active. This is really annoying, especially when I try to open Intel Extreme Utility during throttling—it randomly restarts the laptop. If you have any advice, please let me know.
Same problem here, I don't know. My laptop stops acting oddly when the temperature gets high and also when I connect the left USB or Type-C port. The CPU seems to slow down too. I'm sorry for the unclear English.
Hello, I'm facing the same issue too (Asus V16 V3607VH core 7 240H, RTX 5050). The laptop is only two weeks old and I'm seeing a major performance drop while gaming. I'm still trying to figure out what's causing it. From my tests with MSI afterburner, the GPU and CPU power consumption drops sharply after about 5 to 10 minutes of gameplay—from 60 watts down to around 30 watts. The load percentages also decrease significantly, from 99% to around 10-20%. The GPU voltage setting is labeled as "voltage," but this isn't due to overheating; it recovers when temperature drops, yet the issue persists until the game restarts or even the system reboots.
I've noticed a few possible triggers: first, using the USB-C port on the left side seems to cause the power drop—plugging any peripheral into USB-C (even displays, mice, keyboards) triggers it around 5-10 minutes of gaming. Restarting the game or unplugging it resolves the problem, and I can run Cyberpunk 2077 at high settings without issues. Second, using an external display via HDMI might cause inconsistent FPS drops; sometimes it happens after just a few minutes, other times not at all. Lastly, connecting the cooling pad directly to the USB hub could be another factor, possibly limiting power delivery even though the laptop's TDP is 75W with a 150W adapter.
I'm really struggling and would appreciate any official Asus response or advice. This issue seems widespread among users.
I tried several steps to resolve the issue. First, I used an overclocking tool similar to Intel Extreme Tuning Utility while the laptop was under power throttling. I adjusted the settings in Advanced Tuning, increased the Turbo Boost Power Max to a random value between 60 and 75 watts, applied the changes, and then disabled Turbo Boost Short Power Max Enable. This stopped power throttling unless I restarted or put the laptop to sleep. It seems the problem might be related to Windows—checking for updates or installing a different version could help.
I believe it's not a software issue. The problem might lie with the EC affecting the processor's power supply. This condition is called "BD PROCHOT," which sends a misleading signal to slow down the CPU. You could disable it using Throttle Stop. Also, I don't think Asus provided us with a laptop that lacked sufficient power.
It seems like you're likely dealing with a motherboard issue. If you choose to file a warranty claim, let me know and I'll provide the latest details so you can confirm acceptance.
