User seeks the initial confusing query among several simple ones.
Long term Mac user crossing over to the Dark Side. Step One, Done... All parts have been ordered, some already arrived. Step Two, working on it... I'm now trying to make sure I'll have all of the fiddle-bits collected so that I may successfully, Build, Post, and Install all on the same day. (It may not be a good omen that it was only a couple days ago that I discovered what "POST" even meant?) With only my wits (and something called the Internet) I'll be building a bright and shiny beast that takes names and breathes fire (I pray its only a metaphorical fire). But before this next quest may begin, I will need to wield the Mighty... Thumb-drive of Power. -- Okay, what I really need to figure out is how to get the Windows install .exe from the internet to a thumb-drive by using only a Mac. Will there be any problems just copying it onto a drive? What format should the drive use? Any tips for this step in the process? Thanks, emcee2
You're unsure if you read correctly, but you need assistance installing Windows on a Mac. To get started, visit the Microsoft website and download Windows 10. Save the file, then run it and follow the instructions—select USB instead of ISO. Make sure the USB drive is at least 8 GB.
You can obtain Windows through two methods from the official Microsoft site. The first involves downloading the Windows 10 Media Creation Tool, which prepares and generates the USB stick for installation. This method may not be compatible with Macs. The second option requires downloading the Windows 10 ISO file and using specific software to transfer it onto a USB drive—uncertain if this works on Mac systems.
You can't simply paste the file onto the USB stick. Instead, you'll get an ISO image of Windows. macOS includes Boot Camp Assistant (search via Spotlight or Launchpad). You can utilize it to create a Windows installation USB from your Mac. The link provided contains the ISO download. You won't need to worry about partitioning your Mac—Boot Camp Assistant will handle that, and it should function on other devices as well.
Format the drive using NTFS with Disk Utility and restore the ISO to your thumb drive via Disk Utility as well. This approach seems most logical at first glance, though I'm not certain if it will work. You might also consider using Etcher or the Mac version for easier handling; they require downloading the ISO beforehand. https://www.balena.io/etcher/ Avoid Bootcamp Media since it attempts to install many Mac-specific drivers.
Boot Camp Assistant is built into macOS, so you don’t need to install additional drivers separately. No extra software is required because the system already supports it. I’m not claiming it won’t function, but there’s no point in downloading more programs when the computer can handle the task itself. Also, the drivers won’t cause any issues even if they’re installed.
This discussion is amusing because many individuals are offering assistance despite limited understanding of the topic. (excluding @BondiBlue)
