I previously used two hard drives—Windows 7 on one and Windows 10 on another. After formatting the SSD with Windows 10, I tried booting from it but couldn’t access my original Windows 10 installation. Now I’m stuck without using the new drive that had Windows 10 installed. Can I switch the drive to read as a C drive?
It seems the boot sector for your Windows 10 OS was stored on a Windows 7 drive. You may be able to restore it using a USB installation media and the command prompt, though I can't guide you through that process since I haven't deleted my boot sector before. Generally, it's safest to keep only one drive installed during OS installation to avoid such issues. Edit: Refer to https://neosmart.net/wiki/fix-mbr/#Fix_t...Windows_10 for more details.
when starting up on a specific partition with a particular operating system, the system labels that drive as 'c' disk. it might be due to compatibility issues since both drives are solid-state drives, though this is unlikely. based on my experience, windows 7 and 10 can clash significantly. try cleaning the drive using another machine and completely erasing it with a dedicated tool. there are many reliable options available. i recently switched from windows 10 to a new ssd, leaving my old version on an hdd for storage. with windows 10 on the ssd, the installation on the new drive works perfectly, while booting into the old version causes errors and crashes. for future reference, disconnect the ssd before upgrading to windows 7 if you want smoother performance.
I attempted to fix the drive using a USB, but it kept reporting no errors. It seems the issue might be related to it being treated as a D drive rather than a C drive, and I’m unable to change the current C drive name because of that limitation. It looks like I made a mistake with this repair.
