I plan to assemble a PC for my dad this Christmas to swap in his outdated laptop. I’ll likely create one myself as well. His machine probably runs an i3-10100 and I’ll use something like an i7-9700k or the latest equivalent. For the i3-10100, it officially maxed out at 2666Mhz. If I install a dual-channel 3200Mhz setup with that CPU, what will happen?

Intel restricts you to the officially approved RAM rates on Z boards (such as Z490). If you're not using one, your speed will be capped at 2666Mhz.

On a Z490 board, you can use 3200mhz parts, but anything above 2666 isn't fully reliable. For B or H series boards, running at 3200 won't work—the chip will throttle itself.
