Hello, I'm setting up a pfSense router and have a couple questions: A) Can I run pfSense inside a VM while connecting the required network cards? B) Should I connect an Mellanox sfp+ NIC to the LAN output (I already have a switch with four sfp+ ports), and can I keep standard Gigabit for the WAN connection?

Typically, users install pfSense inside a virtual machine and connect a particular network interface.

A) You can link the VM to a vSwitch via the assigned interface or use PCI-Express device passthrough based on the HyperVisor you choose. Options include Hyper-V, ESXi, KVM, Xen, etc.
B) Place the device inside the VM; this simplifies management and keeps the configuration intact if you need a vSwitch later.
