I have a USB Wi-Fi adapter on my desktop and noticed my speeds were in decimals instead of the expected 40mbps, especially near the router or other rooms. I ruled out distance as the issue since I got good speeds when keeping the same distance from my phone. I think the problem is due to physical barriers like walls. Regarding your question, do PCIe Wi-Fi adapters perform better through walls compared to USB Wi-Fi adapters?

Use an Ethernet cable for a stable connection, or Wi-Fi will remain unreliable.

Unfortunately, Ethernet isn't really available; since we're renting, drilling holes in the wall for a 10-meter cable installation isn't permitted.

Run a white cable along the edge of the wall or baseboard without drilling. Flat Ethernet cables are available for purchase.

the room where my leads are entirely separate from the main house means it would be better spent outside, and having an Ethernet cable would be a bit of a mess

Consider burying it? Unless it's a separate unit, the main house Wi-Fi will be even worse. PCIe adapters usually perform better than USB ones.
