USB WiFi adapter leading to latency issues in online gaming sessions
Hello, I’m dealing with a high-end system that includes a Wi-Fi adapter. Right now I can’t connect via a physical cable because it won’t arrive soon enough. I notice occasional frame time fluctuations only when playing online games—like in GRID 2, Rust, or PUBG. It seems USB Wi-Fi adapters often push the CPU to handle the adapter tasks first, which delays rendering frames. Offline sessions run smoothly. Is there a way to stabilize frame timing during online play with the adapter? Also, my latency stays consistent around 50ms, so I’m not focusing on that right now.
PC specs: MSI Ventus RTX 2060 6GB OC GPU i5 9600k (stock), 16GB RAM, 3000MB SSD, Patriot Burst 240GB SSD, Seagate Barracuda 2TB HDD, MSI Tomahawk Z390 motherboard, Neti WF2190 Wi-Fi adapter, Seasonic Focus Plus Gold 650W PSU, Windows 10 Home 64bit. I’m attaching some MSI Afterburner logs. GRID 2 offline: Rust capped at 74fps using RTSS.
I'm focusing on performance duration rather than delays. Take a look at the full article for details.
Your connection speed isn’t the only factor—signal quality and occasional interruptions can also affect performance. Have you checked for consistent speeds over time or run extended tests?
I didn’t need any special software to check the connection—just a quick ping from the command prompt worked fine. Ehat, if you want to ensure everything’s connected smoothly, using a dedicated network test tool would be best. After all, I’m more interested in the real-time performance than latency.
It seems there could be data loss or lag while playing, making it hard to resolve quickly. A typical scenario involves delays where your client abruptly reports missed information, forcing it to handle the data fast. We only have a limited view of the problem. How are your CPU and GPU performing during this? Are they overheating? Rust needs an i7 minimum, focusing on thread count rather than cores. Testing by pinging your local router versus your gaming server will give different insights. I recommend opening a command prompt and checking the ping to the gaming server or using a search like "ping google.com -t" while playing.
