It's entirely likely the system doesn't allow dual booting. HP tends to be selective about which products are suited for specific uses.

It might not be a Linux kernel panic but a POST error. Check for any system messages or logs after trying to connect.

I worked with HP for years, I found out that removing all the HP clutter from the system gives you freedom to do anything. It was all trial and error—it's just a programmable setup, so don't be shy trying it out. Every part works when the voltage is right...HP (lol)
