Checked various online sources and forums, but the question hasn't been asked exactly like this before. Plugging specific USB devices often causes my computer to shut down or restart. After testing multiple USB ports—including both the case and motherboard slots—I’ve waited for residual power to fade before turning it back on. I've swapped out different USB hubs, unplugged other gadgets while connecting the problematic ones, replaced the power supply unit, and tried various outlets. With a powered USB hub, the affected drives function properly. The devices triggering these issues are: Western Digital 5 TB My Passport portable HDD, Toshiba 4 TB portable HDD (previously working), Targus powered USB hub (ARC119) without power, and sometimes exporting images in Lightroom causes the same reboot. What seems stable: Toshiba 2 TB portable HDD, standard USB flash drives, and the Lindy USB SD card reader. The powered USB hub with power works for those affected drives. System specs: Windows 11 Pro 64-bit (10.0, Bild 22631), Gigabyte B450 motherboard, AORUS PRO WIFI, BIOS F64e, AMD Ryzen 7 3800X CPU, Corsair Vengeance LPX RAM (2x8 GB, 3200 Mhz, CL16 DDR4), MSI RTX 2070 GPU, Coolermaster MWE Gold 650W PSU, MetallicGear Neo Mini Case, Gigabyte GSM2NE3 M.2 SSD, and a few monitors. Based in Melbourne, Australia. If power standards matter, let me know!
