I'm updating to Ubuntu 24.04 for my server setup. The motherboard doesn't have any audio hardware, so I need a card or USB DAC that handles 5.1 audio smoothly without complications. Anyone have recommendations that actually work in practice?

The audio quality in Linux for non-native sound chips tends to be limited, especially when trying to emulate hardware like a soundcard. A recent discussion on Ask Ubuntu addresses this issue, noting that while an Xonar DX works fine, it's unclear if 5.1 audio support exists. The forum also mentions the device is outdated and no longer officially supported by Asus, which might make finding compatible parts difficult.
