The goal is to find the optimal RAM for an 1700X + X370 setup, aiming for around 3000–3200 MHz. I'm avoiding Corsair options and looking for reliable performance in older Ryzen systems.

The first generation Ryzen chips don’t actually offer a 3000MT/s speed, so you’ll likely be getting either 3200MT/s or 2933MT/s. Most recent BIOS versions let most boards reach 2933MT/s, but whether you hit 3200MT/s depends on chance. I’ve experienced solid performance with my first-gen units—the four I’ve used all ran smoothly at 3200MT/s CL14, which is unusual. The best compatibility options for these chips are A2-based B die kits such as 3200CL14, 3600CL17, 4000CL17, etc., though only 3200CL14 has an XMP profile that should work well. Other kits won’t support 3200CL14 reliably. The drawback is their high cost (around $100 for a 2x8GB package), making them impractical for a system six years old. Finding used 16GB kits at reasonable prices is tough, but I’ve found 32GB B die kits for about $80 on sites like FB Marketplace. If you need a decent deal, go with the cheapest available and accept the risks—3200MT/s is probably your outcome, and you can always adjust speed or return if it doesn’t boot properly. Generally, spending extra on a good RAM upgrade isn’t worth it.

A generic kit should work at its default 2133 MHz, allowing you to later apply DOCP/XMP profiles. If needed, I’ll check the Troubleshooting thread with my name. The price is a concern, so I’m looking for more affordable options. The other replies recommended 3200 MHz kits, but your mention of a cap at 2733 might relate to using all four DIMM slots—let me know if that’s the case.

Running a 4x8 setup will definitely be challenging, especially aiming for 3200. Even then, you might still face issues maintaining the promised performance for that era.

The first-gen Ryzen's Integrated Memory Controller isn't as powerful as the later 3000 and 5000 lines. I recall assisting a friend with his Ryzen 1700X + X370 setup. XMP DDR4-3000 didn't function properly, even with two 8GB modules. It only worked at 2933 MHz using two sticks, and we had to lower it to 2666 or 2400 with four sticks. Adding more RAM increases load on the IMC, reducing its speed. Unless you have a very specific test case, I doubt DDR4-2933+ will work without boosting voltage or changing memory timings.

It's hard to dispute that first-gen Ryzens aren't top RAM performers in terms of MHz; most high-quality units should work well. You'd likely see around 2600–2800 MHz, especially with a good timing setup.
