Upgrading i5-8400 to 10700K or 11700K
you have an i5-8400 with a 2070 super at 1440p, sometimes it stutters during games, and your usage stays at 100% most of the time. you're thinking about upgrading to an i7-10700k or 11700k. some people say it might be a CPU bottleneck, but you're not sure. your specs include an i5-8400 with 2x8GB RAM, 2666MHz clock speed, a mini Zotac 2070 super.
I’m setting up a gigabyte Vision G and will receive the Be Quiet Dark Rock Pro 4, Lian Li Lancool 2 mesh, and Cooler Master MWE Gold 750W.
I was thinking about getting one of those CPUs, but I realized the 10700K is only $500 (386 USD). I was aiming to future-proof and possibly keep a Chrome tab open while gaming, maybe even trying for streaming soon.
386usd for a 10700k sounds expensive. Running Chrome and a game together is surprisingly smooth. You can handle it on almost any modern CPU. Streaming now often depends on the GPU, especially with NVENC enabled—this helps reduce performance loss while keeping quality similar. Stick with a mid-range CPU; at 1440p you’ll notice almost no difference between a 10400 and a 10700k. If you really want 8 cores, the 3700x is a better choice—it’s more affordable and performs better than both the 3600 and 10400k, which the 10700k doesn’t justify.
The 3700X motherboards are more affordable, and you won’t need a costly cooler. Overall, the 3700X combo offers good value—PCPartPicker lists it at $651.30, including shipping and taxes. You might also consider a B-series board, but it would restrict overclocking and cap RAM speeds.
