Upgrading compatibility
Hello there,
My PC's main parts are six years old and have these details: CPU I5-8400, GPU 1060 3GB, 360GB RAM, 550W power, and 8GB RAM at 2400Hz.
I'm planning to upgrade gradually, starting with the 4070 Super, but I know the PS might not be enough and will need to match the GPU, so I kept that in mind. I'm looking for the minimum wattage needed if possible.
Next upgrades would be the CPU and motherboard, which should come a few months later.
I'm wondering if there will be any compatibility issues with fitting the GPU into my current setup. I understand it could create a bottleneck, but I want to know how to handle it.
Also, is the 4070 worth it, or should I wait and upgrade the rest sooner?
Target an RTX4070 Super or better instead of the RTX4070.
PS: The power supply unit is 550W.
What is the model and age of your PSU? Have you decided which brands to consider when buying a GPU?
When considering a new PSU purchase, focus on a dependably built 650W unit so it remains functional for a long time and provides good value.
My current PSU is AFOX AFPS-550A1, I got it six years ago. I didn't really choose a GPU brand and it mostly depends on the cost, but I found two options with good prices and I'm likely to pick either of them. Zotac twin Edge, ASUS dual
Unless you require specific Nvidia features, I’d consider AMD options now. The 7900gre offers better performance compared to the 4070 at a similar cost, and it outperforms more expensive 4070 models. The 7800xt is marginally quicker while being more affordable. Here’s a price comparison list along with a PSU suggestion. It’s more than what you need, but not excessively priced relative to lower wattage PSUs of comparable quality.

Thank you for your guidance. While gaming remains a key focus for me, I'm also worried about handling Machine Learning training models and running them locally. Since Nvidia GPUs and their CUDA are significantly superior in this context compared to AMD, I believe it would be more suitable for my requirements. Otherwise, I would have definitely chosen AMD.
