Hey there,
I’m thinking about improving my old PC.
In a nutshell, it’s been having stability problems for months now, and I can’t boot or see a blue screen saying it needs fixing. I’ve checked all the parts except the CPU and motherboard in my brother’s machine, which worked perfectly. I think the CPU or motherboard just failed.
Now I can make a solid decision about upgrading.

Current specs:
- R5 2600
- MSI B450 Tomahawk
- ROG Vega 64 OC
- G.Skill Trident Z 3200 CL 16 GB 2x8GB
- bequiet! Pure Power 12M 650W (new after an RMA, they found something but it wasn’t the issue)
- 2TB WD HDD
- Crucial 500GB SSD
- CPU cooler: Alpenföhn Ben Nevis

I have two options for the CPU socket: AM4 or AM5.
For the CPU itself, I’m considering Ryzen 7 5800X3D (275€) or Ryzen 7 7700 (229€, in a tray).
For the motherboard, I’m looking at AM4 or AM5.

I also have a few RAM options: keep the current G.Skill Trident Z5 NEO RGB DDR5 6000 CL30 32GB (124€), or upgrade to G.Skill Trident Z5 NEO RGB DDR5 6000 CL30 64GB (124€).
And for the GPU, I’m weighing between a Ryzen 7 7700 for better performance and future-proofing, or the Ryzen 7 5800X3D for now.

If I plan to upgrade my GPU in the next couple of years and run SolidWorks often for my studies, what’s the best choice?
Your advice would be greatly appreciated!

I’d take this as a reason to switch to the new platform.
The PSU in your build is quite old. It might be due to a corrupt BIOS or a failing processor. I’ve noticed some processors with a bad IMC that can cause POST issues, but that would mean we’re dealing with your older system—something better suited for another discussion.

Thanks for the update! I’m also considering that alternative.
I replaced the CMOS battery two months ago, but it only indicated a change without fixing the issue.
I’ve noticed some processors with a bad IMC to also trigger a no-start POST, which would suggest we’re dealing with an older system—this part is still pending in another thread.
I posted a question earlier, but it hasn’t been addressed yet.
