your laptop comes with a 128gb m.2 ssd and you want to improve performance without losing your windows license. you’re thinking about a mirror image or a fresh install, but you’re concerned about the licensing rules. it’s still possible to keep your license intact by using a clean installation, as many licenses are tied to the original hardware rather than the drive itself. you don’t necessarily need to preserve all oem partitions—they’re mostly for system utilities and may not affect your license. just make sure to back up any important data before proceeding with the upgrade.

The license details are stored in the BIOS, and the installer will recognize it when installing.

No way... would you like me to get a copy of Windows 10 from Microsoft or use a torrent site without needing a serial number?

Additionally, if it isn’t installed in the BIOS (meaning the laptop didn’t come with the operating system), and you used your Microsoft account, the license remains there. Logging into that same account on the same device later should restore the OS.

It comes from Microsoft obviously because you can, avoiding any questionable or possibly compromised software. Yes, it will automatically recognize itself during setup and won’t need you to specify the version (home or pro) to install—it will use the license you already have. If you still need your key, there are utilities available like https://www.nirsoft.net/utils/product_cd...iewer.html

the laptop includes the operating system by default. i have a microsoft account, but i don’t use it often. i’m not sure if my license is saved there. maybe i can check that later? thanks. i’ll remember this in case. i plan to use the official version then.

You don't have to worry about the partitions; the installer will handle everything correctly.
