Upgraded my R5 5600X with overclocking.
I performed some PBO overclocking on my R5 5600X using an MSI B550 Mortar Wifi. On Cinebench R23 I achieved 11524 points for multicore and 1535 for singlecore. Multicore performance jumps from around 4624 to 4674 MHz, while singlecore stays near 4849 MHz. In games, I consistently reach the full 4849 MHz across all cores, though in Monster Hunter World I noticed a noticeable boost in frame rates during low frames, eliminating microstutters. This approach feels fast and effective, but I’m open to exploring higher sustained multicore speeds under load. What are your thoughts?
This person isn't too concerned about the R23 model. I wouldn't go for the -30 plus 200 all-core stable on any Zen 3 chip. But if it functions... when crashes happen, you'll need to figure out how to handle them.
So far it handled an hour of OCCT, several hours on Realbench and 30 Min Cinebench R23. Plus a lot of gaming recently. If it isn't fully stable, it's at least 99.5%. Edit: The manual PBO limits seem to be what keeps the OC steady. If I push for higher OC, I'd likely experiment with that. Updated May 5, 2024 by Hans Power
It's definitely reliable (I ran R23 for two hours) but when it comes to PBO overclocking, my cooling solution and BIOS version seem to be the main issues. Changing voltage or pushing limits didn't help. Understanding how PBO functions makes sense, though. I think static overclocking might work in theory, but it's not really feasible for a regular daily system. Still, achieving 100% stability at -30°C, a full +200 single-core boost on every core, and maintaining over 4.6GHz consistently is quite impressive for PBO overclocking.
The 10x scaling is designed to maintain performance and stability, ensuring the chip functions correctly even without auto or 1X settings. Using a lower scale like 1x can cause issues with heat management and responsiveness.
I believed it just extends the peak voltage during boost. Others claim it also raises the max voltage, but when I check VDD and VID it stays at 1.4V whether auto or at 10x. There doesn’t appear to be official AMD docs on this, so I’m not fully confident. I’ll keep it on auto for now and observe stability. Overall (with the curve at 10x), I experienced one crash during a reboot. After that, I adjusted the curve optimizer to -29 instead of -30 and haven’t had another crash.
