You're setting up a PC for a friend and received a Windows 8.1 DVD. You want to move to Windows 10 directly, not just upgrade from 8.1. Yes, it's possible to install Windows 10 without going through the 8.1 license, but you'll need to follow the official upgrade path provided by Microsoft.

You might want to test the suggested method for Windows 8 keys installation. It seems to help with the Win 8 Keys for Win 8.1 setup. Dreamspark is still missing Win10 support at the moment.

You must wait for the upgrade to complete. Once finished, proceed with the upgrade and perform a clean installation.

Sure thing.
Also, the interesting part is I'm using Dream Spark version and the update is working fine. It's still loading now. I'm writing this on my MacBook (hate incoming).

I have an MBPr 13 that’s two years old for school too, and WinLaptops really messed with me.

Hannah, that's exactly what I want. I don't need it just to play games on my laptop—I need it to work and for entertainment or surfing, and it performs really well for me 😊
