I own a ready-made system with a graphics card already installed, and I’m thinking about adding more RAM. I need to figure out whether I should get RAM that came with the build or if I can use any standard RAM.

You can use any RAM that fits technically. Which RAM model is your motherboard using—DDR3 or DDR4? Is there sufficient room next to your cooler? For most tasks, these are typically all you need to consider.

Even if it's an HP prebuilt with any DDR2 RAM that actually fits, it should function properly.

Sorry for the late response. If your system is using ddr2, then I see no reason why any "normal" ddr2 dimms wouldn't work.
