Hello everyone, I'm planning to upgrade my PC since I'm selling it to a friend. The only thing I'll cut costs on is the GPU. My current setup is: CPU - Ryzen 5 2600, MBO - B450, GPU - Tomahawk 1080, RAM - 2x8GB, HyperX Predator 2933Mhz, SSD - Samsung 860 PRO, HDD - 1TB 7200RPM, case - TD500 White Mesh. I was hoping to buy: CPU - Ryzen 5 5600X, MBO - B550, RAM - Patriot Viper steel 2x8GB at 4000MHz or similar, CL16 SSD, Patriot Viper VPN100 256GB, HDD - 1TB 7200RPM. I read on a forum about issues with B550 Tomahawk BIOS and RAM, is that accurate? Now I'm unsure what to purchase. I do both programming and gaming. If you have any recommendations, please share. Thanks!
The 5600x consumes less power, making a mid-range B550 board such as the ASRock Pro4 suitable. Also, include a 1TB SSD to store your games—games aren’t limited to old HDDs anymore. You won’t need separate operating systems and game drives; just a single 1TB SSD works.
The main problem stopping the CPU from running smoothly in the B550 Tomahawk is the BIOS version included with the motherboard. It doesn’t work with AMD 5000 series CPUs, so you’ll need to update the BIOS to the latest version that supports AMD 5000. Because the board has a flash BIOS button on its back I/O, you should be able to update using a USB thumb drive that contains the new BIOS. That’s essentially the only BIOS-related concern.

You only need to refresh the BIOS. For RAM, Patriot Viper Steel 2x8GB at 4000MHz is a solid choice. You can calculate DRAM capacity easily. OC to 3600 MHz is fine if you're comfortable with it.
It seems you're considering a quick BIOS update on your motherboard, which should get things back to normal. I tend to use Corsair RAM since I rarely run into problems, though I can't comment on AMD systems. The Patriot Viper Steel works well, but if you're targeting 4000Mhz, it's better to enable DOCP for optimal performance.
