Hello, it's time to upgrade my CPU from an FX-6300 to a Ryzen 5 1600 with a mobile interface and RAM swap. I'm wondering if I can still run the same Windows installation on the same hard drive after the change. When I first got the PC, the old drive didn't boot Windows on the new system, even though it worked perfectly before.

You're able to proceed, though it requires linking to your Microsoft account. If you already have one, it's easy to confirm the hardware change and ensure your license remains valid—especially if it's an OEM key, you may need to contact MS directly for a smooth transition. Without an active MS account, set one up and connect it to your profile.

Sure, happy to help. Could you clarify what you're referring to? That way I can give you a more accurate answer.

What operating system are you using? Also, be sure to reinstall a clean copy of Windows whenever you transfer your HDDs or SSDs.

It's not a simple issue. The method varies based on where you bought the PC: retail key for direct purchase, OEM key if from an authorized vendor, or you can use the command "slmgr.vbs /dlv" in Windows to check your installation channel.

Using Windows 10 is fine. I’ll share this later when I’m back home. I’ll let you know if I have more questions.

for reference, this is what mine says (Some numbers blacked out due to an abundance of caution, I don't think they are actually important, but better to be safe than sorry)
