Hello, I'm trying to clarify a few points but unsure if I'm in the right place. My friend has a MacBook Pro (13-inch, mid-2012) with 4GB RAM. People say it's not enough nowadays, and her usual tasks like Photoshop, AutoCAD, or light games felt slow. I recommended adding more RAM. I thought she had just one 4GB stick, but after checking, there are two 2GB modules in dual-channel mode. My questions are: 1. Can a good 4GB module (1600 MHz) fit her laptop? Does it need a specific brand or model? Also, does Apple require anything special? 2. If she uses two different sticks, would it work? I’m new to upgrading and don’t know much about Macs.

Generally, a standard DDR3/DRD3L should function. As long as voltages and timings match, compatibility issues shouldn't arise. Combining RAM from different brands might work sometimes, but it's not reliable. Always verify whether the RAM is DDR3L (1.35V) or DDR3 (1.5V).

Thanks for the response. I’ll aim to match what’s already there as closely as possible. By the way, I’ve got RAM set up on my main PC with various timings, and it’s functioning fine so far—even though it seems off.

MacBook isn’t doing much, unfortunately. It’s worth getting it cleaned or selling it. Consider upgrading to a newer MacBook Pro or switching to a solid Windows ultrabook instead.

Confirm the original statement is clear. Verify if it means checking whether the original spec is DDR3L or standard DDR3.

Based on my observations, performance has noticeably declined. In my older laptop with 6 GB, everything ran smoothly. Recently, a module failed, forcing a replacement. Now with only 4 GB, even basic tasks like Spotify and Notepad++ feel sluggish. Additionally, laptops remain prohibitively costly in our economic climate with high taxes.

MacBooks are much better at saving resources when handling simple jobs. You probably face overheating problems (which happen often) or the processor is reaching its maximum capacity (it's an older low-end core after all). For gaming, the iGPU on Ivy Bridge isn’t powerful enough to improve performance even with extra RAM.

I understand. It seems better to avoid wasting her time on something that could fail. Maybe the dirt is the issue too? I suspect the MacBook wasn't properly opened.

MacBooks are commonly recognized for generating intense heat, and even a small amount of dust can quickly lead to overheating issues.

Use a gentle cleaning method and avoid any harsh substances. Take care not to damage the device during the process.
