Hey everyone, here are a few questions. Last year I switched to BT 900mb FTTP and it worked great, but the router they gave me wasn’t ideal. Now I’m ready to upgrade and have the funds and time. I’ve bought an open frame rack 18U on eBay for £160. I was thinking about Ubiquiti but found their products too pricey. TP-Link’s Omada line looks similar yet more affordable compared to Ubiquiti UniFi. Any advice on whether these models are a good fit at around half the price? My current router is a PowerEdge R210 with 8GB RAM and a quad-core Xeon, which I know isn’t ideal for a PFSense setup, but it worked fine with rails at only £60.
Ubiquiti EdgeRouters offer some of the most affordable options available for their equipment when in stock. EdgerouterX is typically available used and may support gigabit speeds, though I’m not sure. Pfsense performs just as efficiently as the devices it’s installed on.
I possess a compact ER-X with a design supporting just over 900mbps for regular packets. I'm unsure whether this is meant for WAN or if it covers the entire path from WAN to LAN plus LAN to LAN. Considering the 900mbps ISP connection, it could suit certain setups depending on requirements. Other edge routers offer varied port configurations and speeds too.
Be careful because BT relies on PPPoE, meaning not every device supporting Gigabit NAT will support PPP at those rates.
