In short, one of my siblings acquired a Ryzen 7 5700X3D and asked me to upgrade his existing PC. Eventually, we discovered we couldn't do it because the motherboard only supports certain AM4 CPUs. Still, he remains firm on that specific CPU, so we're now considering replacing the motherboard, the case, and the power supply (to provide more space and power—perhaps around 850W for a future GPU upgrade—and to meet other online suggestions). We also want better airflow in the case since it's currently quite poor. We plan to sell any remaining parts.

The current specs of the pre-built unit are an HP Omen 25L (GT12-0157c):

- CPU: Ryzen 7 3700X
- GPU: RX 5700
- Memory: 16 GB (2x 8 GB) HyperX Fury (3200 MT/s, DDR4)
- PSU: 500W 80 PLUS Bronze Cooler Master (PS-4501-2)
- Motherboard: HP Omen Moria 3 (L93972-001), MicroATX, AM4
- Storage: 512 GB NVME SSD and 1 TB HDD

I’ve never built a PC or made upgrades before, except for storage, so I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed by all the details. What should I focus on to ensure the motherboard, case, and PSU work together smoothly? We don’t want any more surprises, like realizing our AM4 board isn’t compatible with all AM4 CPUs. Should we also get a new CPU cooler, or is the existing one sufficient for the 5700X3D?

If you have any suggestions on parts, we’re based in Texas and don’t have strong preferences for specific stores or websites—just look for the best price. Your advice would be really appreciated!

thats a pain in the rear if modified the part sheet.
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/8ZgPzP
as long as the case supports the cases motherboard size and connectors for front aio its compatible.
motherboards come in 3 main types.
atx standard. full board features
micro atx tends to be cheaper. less board features but less power hungry then atx.
mini itx smaller but more expensive and less power hungry.
bios for new board here

When you switch the board, it might make sense to get a fresh case and a new cooler. Sometimes these components are exclusive. If you’re close by, a local shop could be your best option—they tend to have good expertise. You might also consider a b550 motherboard. For a cooler, it could be a bit extra but it’s a reasonable choice for the price.

due to your location in texas, i think water cooling would be preferable over air cooling.
i also suggest using a psu since the higher quality components inside will handle heat better.

I don't live near a Microcenter, so that's not an option. However, thanks for the fan and motherboard suggestions. I'm okay with the fan being too much, it's still affordable compared to other components. There are many brands offering the b550, so do you see any real distinctions among them? And do you have any advice on picking a case? I want to make sure the motherboard fits whatever case I choose.

the gigabyte motherboard i talked about includes a bios flash button that doesn’t require the cpu for updating the bios. most b550 models need this flash to work with the 5700x3d. updated part list.

I'll rely on air cooling; if a fan fails, it's not a big issue since we can swap it easily. On the other hand, if the liquid cooling leaks, it might harm all the other parts of his PC, and we'd need to replace many components beyond just the cooling system.

Regarding micro-atx? We're thinking about upgrading the GPU to a larger one later. Do you think there will be enough space for it?

I understand. You could try the standard ATX version next. As for compatibility, it depends on whether the dimensions match and components fit properly. Sizes aren't always strictly standardized, so checking specifications is important.

micro atx tends to be cheaper. it depends are you going to use all the slots on the motherboard ?
air coolings fine but id suggest something like the assassin iv so you dont get memory compatibility of the fan of cheaper coolers invading the memory slots.
leaks rarely happen pump can die. but thats rare unless you install the water cooler on the bottom of the case. or the tubes at a wrong angle.
also before you run out and look for another motherboard etc
you may want to see if this sorts out the motherboard issue by trying to update the bios threw hp assistant.

And indeed, we attempted to update the bios, but it didn't work. The site also mentions that the motherboard only allows for four CPU upgrades:
