Hello everyone. I'm considering an upgrade for my processor and entire system soon. My main focus is CAD work and programming, with gameplay at 1440p and aiming for 4K resolution. I've checked the 10th and 12th generation i9s—10900K and 12900K—paired with Ryzen 7 and 9 chips. I don’t have a strict budget but want the top overall choice since I rarely upgrade. Should I go with the 12th now or hold off until the Ryzen 7000 arrives? Thanks for your advice.
Evaluate the likelihood of DDR5 being unavailable or expensive before committing. Since early adopters would likely buy at the Ryzen 7000 launch, consider potential shortages or high prices. As this is the debut of a new platform, initial versions might have bugs or issues similar to the first AM3 releases.
I wouldn't wait. I'd secure the 12900k and a premium ASUS DDR4 board supporting mono blocks. You can always upgrade to a 13th gen CPU later if needed. I prefer stability over chasing the newest releases—hoping for availability without being stuck months in stock, forced to run on air. Either way, it doesn't deliver much productivity or gaming performance unless you need a tiny extra boost like 20 seconds of render time or 5 fps.
The price difference doesn't justify it for me. However, if funds are available, it might be worth a try. Once, taxes could pay off, particularly when upgrading to newer models like the 13th generation or future AMD releases.
Unless you purchase certain rigs with solid I/O such as hynix 16gbit a die (no firmware code) or samsung 16gbit b die, you won’t be able to reuse them. A minimum of 7200 is recommended for future-proofing, and these components should handle that or better in a few generations when I/O and mobos are decent. Likely they’ll outperform current options like the 6800, mainly through DDR5 overclocking rather than actual performance gains. Essentially, you’re better off sticking to DDR4 unless you build custom loops. High-end CPUs and GPUs usually have enough cooling; for serious cooling, consider a liquid cooler like the 360/420 or a DRP4.
