Upgrade your ASUS S 13 OLED (UM5302) to support LTE and 5G connectivity.
Hello, welcome! I’m new here and this is my first post. I bought an ASUS S 13 OLED (UM5302) a few months back. Overall, I’m really satisfied, though I’m a bit concerned because Asus doesn’t offer a 5G or LTE version of this laptop. That’s why I’m planning to use a mobile hotspot instead. But two days ago, I had an idea: What if I just swap the M.2 module (and antenna) myself and upgrade it? That’s what I’m thinking right now.
My ASUS S 13 OLED came with a Mediatec RZ616 and two antennas. The case is already open, so everything is easy to access—there’s even some extra space left in the chassis! *That’s great!* Since I’ve never modified network components before, I thought it would be wise to ask for advice and get all my questions answered before spending money.
Questions:
1. The WWAN (LTE/5G) modules include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and also LTE/5G—can I replace the Wi-Fi module with a WWAN one without losing any functionality?
2. Should I keep the current antennas or get new ones designed for WWAN?
3. If I need to replace the antennas, can I just add them next to the old ones and leave the Wi-Fi antenna disconnected (just in case I need to revert later)?
4. Are there any other concerns? For example, is the Ryzen 6800U compatible with these WWAN modules? Or are there known firmware issues with ASUS laptops when swapping or upgrading modules?
Any suggestions would be appreciated—thanks a lot!
