I’m planning to switch from H97 to Z97 on my motherboard. I understand I can’t use the original activation code for the OEM, but can I contact Microsoft directly and explain that my old board is no longer supported to request a new key? Also, since I’m not in Canada or the US, do I still have access to obtain a new activation key?

I believe it's possible to mention changes without making false claims about switching motherboards.

I noticed a comment on Tom'sHardware suggesting you have to lie about a new key when someone calls.

It's believed that Windows 7 OEM keys aren't compatible with other motherboards after activation. Some users have tried contacting Microsoft for a key to work elsewhere, but I'm not sure if this is necessary or how it would be handled. With a retail key, you can use the automated process to remove it from an old PC, though OEM keys are typically tied to a specific machine.

You can use the product as purchased without a prebuilt PC. Avoid activating it during installation.
