It depends on what you mean by "upgrade." If you're referring to reinstalling Windows after deactivating and reactivating, the process might differ. Make sure you back up important data first.

I believed a product key functioned solely on one device.

Upgrade from Win7 to Windows 10 on a new machine. Set up the installation, provide the product code, and everything should work properly. In the unlikely event it fails, the original system may stop working.

You're looking to switch from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 while keeping the same hard drive, and you're considering installing Windows 8.1 again using the original product key. It's possible if you have the correct product key and the hardware remains compatible, but be aware that some features or updates might not be available for older versions on newer systems.

Move the hard drive carefully and try again. If the new HDD isn’t recognized, reinstall 8.1 and then upgrade to 10. It should work.

I’ve managed it. From what MS advised, you might need to revert to your older OS and retry the upgrade. This could happen if Windows 10 blocks your key, but that shouldn’t occur.

I spent some time in a tech store fixing computers and frequently handled old product keys.

I’ve had to contact Microsoft repeatedly whenever I made changes on my old system, and Whinedoes didn’t cooperate with the updates or I had to reinstall Windows on my device. It’s been frustrating enough.
