They informed me that Windows 10 Pro is required for certain features when joining. They let us use personal devices unless we buy their own laptops. They offered a free upgrade from Home to Pro and asked for my device serial and model numbers. I’m unsure how this affects the version change. Any thoughts? P.S.: They also mentioned needing to format the whole device before upgrading, so we should move all files first.

This feature helps verify specifications so your home device functions as intended. It lets me set up and operate Win10 Home on a laptop that may lack the capability for productive tasks.

They’re covering the license cost for the update, so they need to identify the device involved. Simple bookkeeping and stock tracking are required.

I don't understand why they require a device serial number, and I wouldn't share that personally. A model number is acceptable since it refers only to your computer type.

It's clearly marked on the back of the device, visible to everyone at any time. You can't really change anything about it. It's just like a car tag—it's merely an identifier. The company requires it.

This applies only if the business requires it for documentation. Otherwise, most people cannot access it unless the property is transparent, and vehicle identifiers aren't visible to all. Ordering parts based on a serial number could be used to obtain components illegally or file warranty claims.

He who handles the serial number might be able to purchase components on their own funds. Those parts, when they exist, are typically sold by the manufacturer. Regarding warranty, they probably won’t fix it with a box of air—just a standard replacement. It seems you're trying to solve a real issue.

Car identification codes are displayed on the dashboard and visible through the windshield from outside. Right now, there are many vehicles parked in our lot. Sure, you can order replacement parts. Who is responsible for those purchases? The person who recorded your VIN does so, not you. You can arrange a warranty claim. How do they perform repairs without being present with the vehicle? Honestly, it seems like a minor hassle at best. By the way, I can retrieve laptop specifications at Starbucks all day if needed. I could easily download your Dell chipset drivers using your laptop’s model number and transfer them to my computer, then... well, nothing happens. I get why you’d prefer not to share details, but it’s not a major issue. If you need the VIN for your car, I’m happy to provide it.

There’s absolutely no correct way to exploit the number. It doesn’t matter at all. You can’t order items under someone else’s name without paying, and if they refuse to ship, it’s not working. The warranty won’t apply if the device isn’t actually present. This is just a meaningless point. I still have that stupid sticker on my phone for years, even with a solid case most of the time. Anyone could have taken it, but it’s completely useless. For the company, it’s just a random barcode used to identify a product they sold once. Anything else is just the person who gave them the code—if they don’t have the device, no warranty can be issued.
