It’s unclear whether the free upgrade to Windows 10 keeps you for life or if it’s a one-year trial before you need to buy a license. Please check the official documentation for details.

You retain it for a long time, YET after the initial year you’ll need to buy a license if you want to upgrade your hardware.

Everyone else mentioned this point, but keep in mind they provide an OEM key—when you upgrade your motherboard, make sure to turn off your key beforehand.

If you have an Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 you can upgrade to Windows 10 for free. But you only have 1 year on you to uppgrade! So if you uppgrade now or sooner and not like after 1 year you will have Windows 10 until your computer crashes. If so you will need to buy Windows 10 if it is after this year. Simply, you can uppgrade for free right now with no charges. I know it might be hard to understand. Hope this help!
