Upgrade to SO-DIMM resulting in failure to boot.
I was planning to upgrade the memory in my work computer, but when they moved everything online, they sent me a HP ProDesk 400 Mini G3. It came with 8GB RAM capped at 2444MHz. I upgraded it to 16GB using the same speed and confirmed compatibility through HP’s site. The specs say 2400MHz at 1.2GHz in an 8GB package. Their website claims it should work fine. After installing, I noticed a BIOS warning light with three long reds and two short whites. The manual mentioned 3.2 as a memory failure sign, but I didn’t think much of it. After re-seating the RAM, the issue disappeared—same problem with SODIMM slots. I tried updating the BIOS, wondering if it might block changes to both slots. My PC’s BIOS is up to date as of April 2021. I booted it again after reseating and got the same error. Eventually, I removed the unit and it worked perfectly in 8GB form factor. Still puzzled—could it be the BIOS preventing modifications? I’m unsure if there’s a setting that locks changes, especially since it was bought on Amazon. Why wouldn’t it work? I feel a bit confused and a little embarrassed.
I haven’t tried it yet, and the OEM sticker doesn’t seem to belong to any familiar brand. I purchased a vital sodimm.
