I just got a 27-inch iMac from 2010 and wanted to know if it’s possible to upgrade past OS X 10.7. I’m curious about the latest supported version for installation. No one around the web seemed very clear, so I’m reaching out for advice. Appreciate it!

You should be able to set up until High Sierra version 10.13.

Here are the details you provided:

Typically, installing an unsupported OSX version on an older device isn’t too difficult, but certain hardware setups can cause issues.
I experienced this with a 15" MacBook Pro from 2011 that I received for free. I attempted to install the latest OSX Catalina after the last supported release was High Sierra.
While it’s usually manageable, my situation involved a specific MBP with a dedicated Radeon HD 6750M, which doesn’t support newer versions because of missing drivers.

This could prevent reaching any version above High Sierra. Here’s what you’re allowed to do: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT208969. It looks like your Mac is compatible, but some applications only function with Mojave or Catalina—releases following High Sierra that are officially supported are available for upgrade.

I’ve discovered this helpful resource, which confirms the same information: https://eshop.macsales.com/guides/Mac_OS...patibility That’s reassuring. I might buy more RAM in the near future—4GB feels quite limiting, especially since Chrome is the only browser that works well. Maybe I’ll even consider upgrading the CPU... Thanks!

Safari functions properly after the update; it works well on my Early 2011 MBP 15" with the HD6750M. The system runs smoothly with 8GB RAM, 240GB Crucial SSD, and i7-2760QM, and performance remains solid. Diablo 3 and League of Legends run nicely even at a lower resolution (1440x900). If you plan to upgrade the OS further, you might need to set up a workaround to disable the Radeon dGPU.

Hi @Crunchy Dragon, the patch page outlines the challenges with the Radeon card on that model: "Common problems: • AMD Radeon HD 5xxx/6xxx series GPU support: Full graphics acceleration isn't available when using Mojave on systems with a Radeon HD 5xxx or 6xxx series GPU. Mojave would be nearly unusable without it. This affects the 15" and 17" MacBook Pro models (MacBookPro8,2 and 8,3). To turn on GPU acceleration, you must disable the AMD GPU (this only works on MacBook Pro 8,2 and 8,3; you can't disable it in an iMac). You might see odd colors when running Mojave with these cards installed."
