Upgrade to an i5 7600K processor
I'm considering upgrading my son's laptop. It's an i5 7600K with 8GB RAM and 2400Mhz. He might benefit from moving to 16GB RAM at 3200Mhz, possibly switching to a Ryzen 3300X for better performance. The CPU and motherboard still hold good value. People are debating whether to wait for the B550 in June or opt for a B450 now. What do you think?
It seems the B550 will last longer. Based on what I understand, I could sell the old CPU, RAM, and memory for about £200 to £3300 depending on the specs. The B550 MATX model around £75 might be a good deal if I didn’t upgrade the RAM, otherwise I’d likely have chosen the 3600 series.
What is the RAM's latency? If it were CL14, you probably don’t need an upgrade because Zen 2 offers strong cache performance and a better cache layout, reducing latency issues.
Consider buying a refurbished i7 6700/6700K/7700/7700K or similar Xeon and adding another 8GB of identical RAM. Why not customize your own system and replace the i7 7700 with your i7 7700?
The transition to the 3300X represents an improvement, but I’m unsure if it’s sufficient just yet. If you’re planning a CPU or motherboard change, I’d favor sticking around a bit longer for a 3600. Upgrading RAM on the current setup might be enough to keep things running smoothly—this could also be extended to a newer system later if needed. It looks like Xeons aren’t available from consumer chipsets, which limits options. Regardless, used i7 CPUs are still holding value, with prices ranging from about £150 to over £200 on eBay. That makes a new CPU+mobo more appealing.
The price of a 7700k in the UK is roughly £220, so it's better to go with the 3300x version. Upgrading my PC won't be for a few years because I need a significant performance boost that exceeds what I can afford right now. The other choice is just to wait and then upgrade later.
It was essentially a minor enhancement. I believed the resale worth at around £100 would provide a solid boost for his PC, lasting several years.
After the new Intel releases hit the market, prices for older used components will likely fall. It might make sense to hold off until then? From an i5 7600K perspective, I’d consider swapping it for a faster used model if only the CPU is replaced. Ryzen 5 3600 and above would be better options. An Intel i5 10600 (i7 8700) or higher would also suit.
