Hi, I have extra Corsair Vengeance LX 3600mhz DDR4 sticks at 2x8GB. I’m considering upgrading my editing PC and am switching from an i7 4790k to a Ryzen 7 2700 and an ASRock B450 board (or similar). Can I manually lower the RAM speed to 3200MHz, fine-tune latency and timing settings so it meets the B450 specifications? It seems 3200MHz works well for those boards.
I adjusted the speed manually and changed the CL settings, but I didn’t order the proper RAM right away.
You can achieve this easily, even without changing settings manually. Simply apply a lower frequency while using DOCP enabled.

You can still operate at full XMP without lowering it, even if you try to reduce it. If the XMP speed exceeds 3200, it may not cause major issues—especially if you don’t adjust other parameters. In my setup, I have two 8GB GSkill Trident Z Neo drives on a B450 board with a 2700X, and it works perfectly at 3600 CL16 right out of the box.
These sticks are now delivered ready for the advertised speeds straight from the box, eliminating the need to adjust settings like XMP. I thought they required manual configuration for each setting.
You need to make sure they support XMP in the BIOS, and performance varies depending on the processor model. The Trident Z Neo came ready out of the box, but only worked smoothly with XMP enabled at 3600 CL16 on a 2700X. I might adjust things later to lower the clock to CL15 or even 14 if needed, but right now it runs very well on the XMP setting without any major issues.
