I'm considering an upgrade for my current setup, with options to get either a 5900X or a 5800X3D at the same cost. I'm also thinking about adding an RTX4080. It's hard to see why the 7800X3D would beat the 4080, especially regarding DLSS and ray tracing. Ray tracing was turned off on my 3070 to boost FPS, which I couldn't achieve with a 3080. I do appreciate the extra 24 to 16GB of VRAM, particularly for AI art work. The X3D is meant to boost FPS in certain games, and the extra cores on the 5900X should help with other tasks. Personally, I think overclocking might have limited me, possibly due to issues with my Be Quiet 360 AIO. Running at 4.6GHz with 16GB RAM under certain conditions felt too slow, but I'm not sure if faster RAM would justify the investment. My current setup includes an MSI B550 850W PSU, a Tomahawk Mobo Bequiet 360 AIO, a 6600K motherboard, and a 1440P 165Hz monitor. So, the main question is whether upgrading to the 5800X3D or the 5900X with more cores makes sense compared to my existing configuration. I do some video editing in DaVinci Resolve but would likely spend much more time gaming instead.

Join the discussions! Which resolution are you using? 5800X3D delivers strong performance at 1080, but quality drops as you move to 1440 and 4K.

5900x comes as a sidegrade from 5600x, not an upgrade for gaming. The sole CPU that fits the AM4 socket and is recommended for gaming is the 5800x3D.

The 3D runs quicker especially for gaming, so it works perfectly.

But... who handles the 1080p? 58X3D works, as does 5900X. But... I don’t apply the default settings on my 5900X—it causes issues.
