Paid a total of $369 plus tax for the 5600X in early October. Just noticed a 5800X on Amazon for $419. Should it be worth upgrading? (Prices are Canadian.) I mainly play games and handle office tasks, with a bit of photo editing. Using NH-U12S should work for the 5800X. I’m not sure what I’d get for selling the 5600X if I upgraded.
No, it doesn't add value. The 5600x covers everything you need. The 5800x offers only minor gains for gaming and a bit more for photo editing, but adding horns to cat photos isn't worth it. Unless you can afford $369 plus tax for the 5600x, it's probably not worth the investment.

Approximately $250 might be the cost. Amazon lists it at $299, meaning used items would likely reduce your budget by a significant amount. I’d only spend up to $250 on used goods if I could purchase new for $300. Keep in mind Microcenter offers it for $250, which could help lower prices near their locations.
Most recent 6-core CPUs (5600x and 12600K) handle everyday tasks well for the average user. The concept of more cores being future-proof is limited; new chips with higher performance will likely arrive before you need them. These newer processors often match or surpass older models. For instance, the 12600K performs comparably to a 16-core Ryzen chip in gaming tests. If you don’t require the additional cores, the 5600x remains a solid option. Steve from Hardware recently demonstrated this in a unboxing video, showing that many games don’t rely on extra cores. Essentially, unless you specifically need the extra cores, the 5600x is a better choice.
I love my little 5600X. Such a great little CPU, and so easy to cool. If you don’t need the cores than the only reason to get 5900X is for the cache and boost clocks. My 5600 boosts to 4850 no problem, but my 5900 boosts to 5150.. bit of a difference.. I bought my 5600x for like 459 plus tax last November, so about 550 or so.. a bit steep.
