Upgrade to 10700K instead of 6700K?
Hi all, Have been running a 6700K for the last 4-5 years at 4.2 GHZ, and was wondering if its worth upgrading to the 10700K. My thing is, I am looking to keep my next CPU for another 4-5 years and wondering if this was a good move. I know Rocket Lake is on the horizon, but given new Nvidia cards and the possibility of PCI-E 4 benefits, I wouldn't want to upgrade and then have to do a major rehaul two years down the road to support new standards. I understand the value proposition of Ryzen, but since my PC is primarily for gaming, I'd like the extra frames. Also play at 1440P. I know we don't have benchmarks yet but just wanted some initial thoughts. Thanks.
If you can extend your current setup by another 8 to 12 months, I’d go ahead and explore the 11th generation Intel chips. This would help ensure better compatibility with PCIe 4.0.
Whatever Intel or AMD releases today, it’s a missed opportunity for lasting upgrades and dependability with evolving software needs. The 10th generation is essentially a rebranded 9th gen processor packed with extra pins and higher power use, aiming to boost performance but adding complexity. LGA1200 brings in the additional 49 pins from LGA1151 just for power delivery—nothing groundbreaking. PCIe Gen4 is mainly a marketing move; it only helps a few NVMe drives by a few milliseconds compared to standard SATA SSDs. 10th gen Intel CPUs don’t support Gen4 either, so it’s wise to hold off until the 11th generation. For AMD, the AM4 platform will likely end around 2020. Therefore, avoid buying new motherboards, chipsets, or components right now—wait for the next generation. If you’re impatient, stick with an AMD 3700X and a solid X570 board; it should last at least five more years with decent performance. Choosing Intel in today’s lineup feels like chasing fan favorites and wasting resources. By the way, I own a 9600MHz 5GHz system and would have chosen AMD if they’d released Zen 3 back then.
Request a 3900x resolution on an X570 using a GPU, assuming 1440p isn't a CPU bottleneck. Consider waiting until the fall for a 4900x, which could offer 10-20% improvement.
What is your budget? Consider whether you're dissatisfied with your current CPU speed when the graphics card is limited by it—that's important. If you can invest, a 6700k to 10700k (9900k on Z490) would provide a great improvement and allow better overclocking. The 6700k usually reaches about 4.7 ghz. I’d choose the Z490 only if I were running an older 4-core setup.
I’m not budget constrained, my thing is with new consoles coming out there is going to be a shift towards more threads and cores for AAA titles. Maybe not this year, but quite possibly next. I’m just wondering whether the benefits of waiting for a new chip architecture are worth it. Or a shift to Ryzen Zen3 not sure anymore.
