Hello, I plan to acquire a free Dell precision workstation equipped with around 8GB RAM and a Pentium D processor. I've searched online to see if it's feasible to install a Core 2 Duo inside it for a basic Minecraft server. However, there appears to be very limited information about the Intel® 955X chipset and a Core 2 Duo together. Could anyone suggest if this is even possible? Otherwise, I might just sell this PC and purchase another more affordable one with a Core 2 Duo.

955X doesn't work with the Core architecture. Choose an option that supports at least a Core 2 Quad Q6600.

I'm considering this idea, too. It comes with a decent 1080p display for free, which might mean I could upgrade my setup by purchasing a Core 2 Quad or even a first-gen Core i5/i3. Sounds promising!

You're looking at a budget around $10 for something similar to a Xeon X3450. This gives you performance comparable to a first-generation i7 with 4 cores and 8 threads. Make sure your motherboard supports the LGA 1156 socket. Some manufacturers may turn off Xeon support, so check compatibility. If you can get into Sandy Bridge (second generation), you can find an H61 board for $25-35 and an i5-2400 for about $20. This setup would make a solid office machine or light gamer depending on your GPU choice. Optiplex 780 boards are great for second-gen CPU builds. If you're limited by budget, the first-gen Xeon is still viable. If you can afford something better than an LGA 775, go for it.

I’ve already tried the LGA1156 route before and assembled a PC for about 100 euros. I sold it for 350. A bit more cash came in, so I bought a Ryzen 5 2600 system. I’m browsing and found an HP Pro 3400 MT (LH122EA) for 45 euros. I’m considering selling the monitor and PC, maybe buying ads instead. I plan to fit an i5 inside and am ready to jump into a Minecraft server.
