I currently have an i7-3770 with 16 GB DDR3 RAM at 1333 MHz. I’m considering using Oracle VirtualBox to set up Linux Mint and Windows Server, but I’m worried about memory limits. My total system capacity is only 32 GB. Do you have any suggestions for buying refurbished RAM in Canada? Also, how much of a performance difference would there be between 16 GB DDR3 at 1333 MHz versus 32 GB DDR3 at 1600 MHz?

You'd pay a reasonable price for refurbished RAM, depending on the model. New kits are priced around 75.99 CDN$ for Timetec, 74.99 CDN$ for Silicon Power, and 81.99 CDN$ for Patriot. The performance gap between 1333 and 1600 MHz is minimal, so it shouldn't be a major concern. For virtual machines, you'd likely need substantial memory—32Gb would be ideal, with portions allocated to different services. You'd also need to consider CPU requirements for each VM; the i7 3770 offers only 4 cores, which limits parallel processing. Assigning threads per VM could help, but upgrading to a more recent processor would improve efficiency. Just my opinion.

Right now, I don’t have funds for a new machine. I already own four sticks with 4 GB of RAM each. I’m looking into refurbished options for 8 GB sticks since I’ll need four of those. Your thoughts would be appreciated.

You have the option to allocate every one of the four cores to each virtual machine simultaneously. The hypervisor will manage this distribution, and performance will be shared accordingly.

Sure, one of the VMs could run Win Server. I’m not a server expert, but I think it wouldn’t handle limited resources well. From what I tried, running Windows 10 in VirtualBox with just 2 cores and 4GB would barely work, let alone Win Server. I’m not sure if this is correct, but I might be mistaken.
