I just moved from an i7 6700 to an i7 9700k and switched to a z390 board. The installation went smoothly except Windows wouldn’t boot. I’m using a WD 1tb M.2 SSD for booting. It’s normal Windows would crash at first, showing the error code 0xc000000f. After removing my 2.5 data HDD and connecting just the M.2 drive, the issue disappeared. I tried using a flash drive with Windows install files for startup repair, but it still reported no problems. When I went to the recovery section, it said no Windows installation was found. I shut down the PC, unplugged the flash drive, and restarted it. It immediately went through BIOS. I repeated the process, opened the command prompt, and attempted to fix BCD files. At some point, typing 'y' or another letter returned nothing on the drive. I’m worried my Windows files might be corrupted or completely erased along with the rest of my data. I’d prefer a fresh Windows install on a separate drive, but I don’t have one. That’s about it. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.
It worked on its own after you installed the HDD. I'm a bit puzzled but glad. Now I just have to set the 9700k to avoid overloading your Noctua NH-L9I.
Often exchanging a CPU and motherboard doesn't go well with older Windows setups. Your existing Windows version might not be as stable. Also, Windows 10 activation should link to the new motherboard. Once you swap the board, your Windows might lose its activation, so verify it's still active.
Yeah, its activated. No watermark thing. This windows key is voided though. It had originally came off of an hp sff. The modo broke on it so I moved my i7 off of that on an msi board.
