Upgrade immediately or hold off for Zen 3?
Waiting a year and a half feels excessive, particularly since the OP requires a 16-core setup while they only have a 4-core processor.
I understand it takes a while, but you don’t have to keep repeating that. If he’s running on a 4-core processor, a 16-core isn’t necessary. Also, the 4770 remains a solid CPU choice. I’d rather focus on suggestions than debate. This forum is meant for ideas, not judgments. Your situation is valid, and so is theirs. They have choices.
My perspective : DDR4 and PCIe 3 are still viable options for some time ahead. It isn't a situation where you're stuck with outdated tech when buying DDR4 or PCIe 3. There will always be improvements on the horizon—like a future Zen4 with AM5, AMD Zen5, and Zen6. Personally, I’d aim to see a 25-30% boost in single-core performance before jumping in. That’s similar to skipping one or two generations back, like moving from 7th to 9th or even 10th generation. It’s all about matching the latest bug fixes and motherboard updates. This is because I’m mainly a casual gamer, so a 5-10% difference wouldn’t make much of a difference for me. And I don’t need heavy multitasking or intensive workloads.
Note: For my current setup, I’m thinking about upgrading from a 7700 non-K to a 10600K/3700X, and I’m still figuring out the bug fixes and compatible motherboards.
