You're considering an upgrade to a newer motherboard with additional M.2 slots or a potential CPU change. The benefits of staying on the X370 line compared to the X570 would include improved performance, better power delivery, and enhanced compatibility with modern storage solutions. Keeping the same CPU offers stability and familiar features while still benefiting from these upgrades.

Only the chipset by itself isn't enough. The real boards might have additional capabilities but that depends on the board, not the chipset. It’s not advised to buy just the chipset; get the full board with the CPU. In practice, Intel refers to this as a name, while AMD uses PCIe labels for it. Also, because it's a 2700X model, it will only support PCIe 3.

standard pci-e 4.0 across all ports, pci-e 3.0 for graphics cards and m.2 devices, pci-e 2.0 for slots linked to the chipset. improved VRM options for CPUs and compatibility with Ryzen 4 are expected to arrive soon. onboard soundcard support may shift from alc887/alc892 to alc1200 or alc1220 based on the board's features, including an extra opamp for high-end headphones. additional USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10Gbps) connectors are available (some models lacked them), possibly with a front panel connector for USB Type-C 10G ports. multiple m.2 slots exist; many X370 boards initially connected the first m.2 via PCIe 3.0 x4, while the second was typically SATA or used only one or two lanes to the chipset, resulting in PCIe 2.0 speeds (500 MB/s per lane) – the second slot could reach up to 1 GB or 2 GB/s. certain boards offered m.2 PCIe 3.0 x4 for the second slot by disabling PCIe x4 or converting it to x1, or by removing one or two x1 slots, which limits options if you need an extra capture card in the PCIe x4 lane.
