Windows 7 OEM keys are valid only on the original device. Upgrading to Windows 8.1 won’t automatically reuse the key, and using it on a laptop isn’t supported.

Upgrading the key changes its type to match the new version. Purchasing a separate Windows 8.1 keeps the Win 7 key functional.
