Upgrade from i7-9700k to i9-9900K Performance boost with next-gen processor
I attempted to replace my 9700K with a 9900K on a fully operational system. Once the swap was done, I accessed the BIOS and it recognized the new CPU correctly. I left everything set to defaults and tried launching Windows. The spinning circles would freeze, forcing me to turn off the machine. When I booted from an installation USB, it reached a similar stage but paused during automatic recovery. I re-seated the CPU and RAM without success. Switching back to the 9700K triggered a Windows repair prompt that only noted incorrect startup. I’m currently typing away. Do you have any additional tips to try? Might be helpful if you know the model is a Strix Z390-E on an 0805 platform.
I removed the battery from the motherboard, thinking that would solve the issue. I waited about 20 minutes before trying to boot, and it was clearly stuck and unresponsive.
I attempted to reinstall the 9900K but instead of disconnecting the CMOS battery, I accidentally shorted two pins mentioned in the manual. No success so far. Anyone else have suggestions? Also, keep in mind that the rest of your components for the round robin will arrive later this week, and you plan to test the CPU on a new build.
I just tested my i9 9900K on a brand-new setup, everything was fresh and it froze at the same place. It seems like calling Intel for an RMA might be the next best option. Any suggestions for other troubleshooting steps?
Sure, I'm glad to hear that! It's great you're staying positive. Just wanted to say thanks for your support!
I've reached out to Intel about resolving this CPU issue, but they’re pushing for a BIOS update despite my concerns. They’ve warned me against updating unless it’s truly needed. It seems their advice isn’t always reliable. Whether this matters depends on the situation—check if the problem is serious enough.
