I’m planning to replace my current i5 6500 with an i7 7700K because the older CPU is hitting performance limits in demanding games. My motherboard restricts me from choosing a higher-end CPU, so the 7700K is the best fit. I won’t be overclocking since my board doesn’t support it.

Here are some points to clarify:
- The new CPU will likely come without a fan or cooler, so I’ll need to buy one separately along with thermal paste.
- My motherboard model is H110M PRO-VD (MS-7996). According to the manufacturer’s site, the newer CPU should work in my slot, but I’ll need to update the BIOS.
- How can I update the BIOS?
Feedback would be really helpful, especially since this is my first time upgrading hardware.

I assume the new CPU won’t include a cooler, so I’ll have to buy one separately, which means adding thermal paste too. Intel has stopped including a cooler with their unlocked processors because they believe people who purchase them will opt for aftermarket cooling solutions that perform better. You might want to consider a tower cooler as well, but I’d also need to check your case and the airflow inside it.

How do I update my BIOS?
Your manual provides instructions on page 17, specifically under the "Updating BIOS" section. You should visit the official site at https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/H110M-PR...pport#bios to download the latest BIOS file and then apply it directly. Using an outdated pen, thumb drive, or USB that’s FAT32 formatted is generally recommended when updating a motherboard’s BIOS.

Confirm if the 7700 will provide sufficient uplift compared to the 6500.

Instead of buying a new CPU for small gains, purchasing one hot chip costs $300 and provides a new CPU plus a much better motherboard with significantly improved performance.

The decision likely hinges on the cost of obtaining the 7700K along with a suitable cooler.

Amazon offers the chip for $229, along with a link to the product page. Considering the i7-7700K is a high-performance model, a mid-sized CPU cooler would be ideal, while a larger one is better. These coolers begin around $30. Therefore, approximately $260 for the i7-7700K or $290 for the i5-14400. A performance boost of just 30 dollars over the i7-7700K is clearly beneficial.

Sure, at those rates I'd be in agreement. It made me think it might be a bargain on eBay, or perhaps a deal from a friend.
I understand the Amazon seller is giving one new item for free, but that seems more like the seller's hope than a realistic price.

I also concur that switching to a new platform is ideal. This ensures continued compatibility with Windows 11. A BIOS update would be necessary to incorporate the latest Intel improvements.

I have my two opinions;
Because the OP has a micro-ATX MoBo, I went with caution and recommended it.
That should definitely fit into the OP's PC case.
The ATX MoBo might work or might not.

If you're looking to test it, check if your board supports a Xeon with specs matching an i7. These are usually not marked as supported, but often they work. They’re also affordable, around twenty dollars or less for a good one, and can improve performance, though major changes may require a platform upgrade. I’ve also attached a YouTube video that explains the bios update process.
