Upgrade from 2700x to 5900x isn't working properly on the PC.
My computer has been running smoothly for a while using the 2700x Ryzen chip. I recently bought an open-box 5900x from a local micro center, which unfortunately caused issues. My setup includes an Asus B450 F gaming motherboard, 32GB G.Skill DDR3000 RAM, RTX 3080 graphics, and previously the 2700x CPU. Round 1: I swapped out the 2700x for the 5900x. After booting up, the motherboard displayed a DRAM yellow error light. I’m certain the RAM is fine, as it has always functioned properly. I replaced the 5900x with the 2700x and manually updated the BIOS. The BIOS on the new board was from 2019, even though I had used Asus utility to check for updates before changing the chips initially. Round 2: I swapped the 2700x again and installed the 5900x. During startup, I received a page message about fTPM. I chose to press Y to reset it. If Bitlocker or encryption was enabled, the system wouldn’t boot without a recovery key. I pressed N to keep the previous fTPM settings and let the system restart. The fTPM didn’t activate on the new CPU; I tried reverting to the old CPU to recover any related keys and data. After selecting N, the PC restarted back to the same menu, then N again, and the process repeated. When I pressed Y, it rebooted and returned to the Windows menu... briefly before returning to the ASUS ROG motherboard display. From there, it became stuck in a loop, repeatedly switching between the ROG background and the Windows loading screen for a few seconds before resetting. I turned off the PC by holding the power button, restarted it, applied optimized defaults on the motherboard, and the next error appeared as an MBR Error 1. Round 3: I powered down the computer, unplugged all SATA drives (the OS was running on my M.2 drive), then reconnected them. Now I’m back in the Windows/ROG motherboard loop once more. I’m at a loss here. I have enough thermal paste for one more application, so I’m considering putting the 2700x back in to see if it will function as it did previously. Tomorrow I ordered additional thermal paste from Amazon and plan to try it again over the weekend. Anyone have any advice on what to do next? It seems the 5900x might be the issue, which is why I returned to Microcenter.
Sadly still no dice on this. I can get to the BIOS, but the machine will just not start windows. On ASUS UEFI Bios Utility I have these settings
My story keeps going. I’ve assembled PCs since the early 2000s and have never been so near handing one over for repair. I’m feeling stuck. Here’s a quick summary: I bought an open box 5900x from microcenter. It came with a 2700x and an Asus B450 motherboard that worked well for about 18 months. After turning it off, swapping the chips, and putting it back in, it booted again. I checked the firmware and found it needed an update. I updated it, restarted, then turned off the system and swapped the CPUs once more. On the next start I encountered a TPM error—tried options but it kept rebooting. Eventually I went back to the BIOS. I selected YES on the same error screen (I don’t remember it) and it got stuck in a boot loop. It would display the Windows loading screen briefly before restarting. After exiting the 2700x, I noticed a red CPU error on the motherboard. By today, I picked up a 570 MSI board on Prime Day. Spent the afternoon untangling cables and zip ties, then installing the new board. It started up normally, loading the BIOS but looping again. So I reformatted my M.2 drive with the OS and made a Windows boot USB. Once more, it’s trapped in an endless boot cycle. I’m running out of options. Have I missed something? Should I consider another CPU or a fresh M.2 drive? I’ve never faced this before, so I’m unsure what to do next. I was counting on the new motherboard and formatting the drive to help.
