Upgrade CPU from 5900x to 5950x
Hello! Upgrading from Ryzen 9 5900x to 5950x seems feasible since their architectures are quite alike. You likely won’t need a completely new operating system unless you have specific software requirements. A fresh OS can still be beneficial for performance and updates.
It wouldn't require much more than exchanging the CPU. Both units use identical CPUs, each with two CCXs and eight cores. The 5900X has only two cores per CCX turned off. CCX refers to core complex. Would you like to know why you're considering an upgrade? Tasks focused on productivity?
I'm developing an animation and will create numerous clips using After Effects. Adobe introduced simultaneous rendering a few months back, optimizing performance with more cores. Edit: current pricing is favorable, making it a promising opportunity.
The extra cores might not justify the modest performance boost. Unless you're constantly working through the day, saving a few minutes repeatedly each day adds up to significant time back over time. If you really want the impact, going all-in would be necessary, but otherwise it feels like a poor investment.
Really? Even with a bigger boost, I’m hesitant to commit to an entirely new platform—financially and technically. It seems like buying a used 5950x and selling my 5900x would be a better move if I can secure a good price.
I've upgraded a 3900X to 5900X, and it took about 15 minutes mainly because of uninstalling and reinstalling the cooler. In productivity terms, this upgrade makes sense—it could save you around $100 to $150 (by buying or selling used) plus the time saved. A 7950X would offer a 50% boost, but it would cost significantly more in both money and effort.
