I’m planning to replace the CPU on your HP Envy 17 (17-J017CL). The board supports socket G3, so that’s compatible. You’re thinking about switching from i5-4200 to i7-4910MQ—this should work with the motherboard. As for the heat sink, it should handle the extra heat from the new processor.

That’s exactly what I intended. Opt for a lower-end 4/8 CPU instead of dealing with excessive heat management.
