Updating Windows 8.1 installation again
Hello everyone, I'm thinking about upgrading my motherboard and wondering if I should get a new Windows OS.
Unless the motherboard is identical, it's okay. You don't have to purchase a fresh operating system; removing the existing one lets you reuse the same product code for reinstallation.
You'd just need to purchase a fresh operating system if your existing one was an OEM variant linked to the motherboard. As long as you own a standard retail copy, you should be okay.
Retail copy refers to marketing materials designed for sale directly to consumers, not the Disk itself.
Disc copies are available in both retail and OEM formats. OEM licenses have restrictions, while full retail copies can be transferred. Typically, retail copies arrive in a box, whereas OEMs are often shrink-wrapped. If it's an OEM product, the label will indicate "OEM" on the serial number.
