I haven't set up version 8.1 on my desktop yet, though I did install 8.0 on my laptop. I cleaned it up from the preview and chose to drop the beta OS before trying an upgrade and keeping old versions. After that, I upgraded to 8.1 and added the Media Center pack, which resolved the issue. It might not solve your problem directly, but it's something worth thinking about. If you wait until my desktop gets upgraded, you may need to wait past November 1st because of midterms.

I used Pro and Media Center. The main issue was insufficient storage—specifically, less than 5.1 GB remaining on the SSD prevented installation. After removing some files, it worked fine again.

I only got Windows 8 recently and after browsing all the available information online, I haven't found it in the store. It seems Microsoft's handling of this issue has been disappointing from the beginning.

Have you checked the recommendations? Ensure Windows 8 is fully updated and drivers are installed (check the device manager). Confirm Windows 8 is properly activated. Launch the status screen, type WSReset.exe, press Enter, restart your PC, and attempt again.

Here are some alternative phrasings for your message:

- I'm experiencing issues with setting up updates, which often leads to missing Windows 8.1 from the store.
- Running WSReset.exe didn't resolve the problem after a restart.
- I'm considering reverting back to Windows 8 and reinstalling the current version.

I can see it at the store right now... it’s still not updating. I’ve considered waiting until they fix it.

I attempted to demonstrate the update, but it isn't installing.

It seems the system is attempting a restart and installation, but Windows fails to complete, reverting to version 8.1 and displaying the same error code 0xC1900101-0x40017.

Ensure the newest Nvidia drivers are applied. During installation, select advanced/custom settings, enable a clean install, and disable the Nvidia 3D options. Verify you have the most recent drivers for all peripherals. Disconnect every external USB device except the mouse and keyboard. Also remove the USB hub, including your monitor. If using Steelseries software, they recommend removing their own tools and note they’re developing 8.1 support. Generally, Microsoft labels this issue as “driver bug detected.” It may also occur if WIn7 drivers are active under Windows 8, causing compatibility problems with 8.1.
